A ceiling stain almost never sits under the hole. Water runs along the underside of the sheathing and down a rafter before it drops, so the entry point is regularly several feet away and uphill. We work the roof and the attic together to find it, rather than sealing the nearest likely-looking gap and hoping.

Where we can get in, the attic shows the trail — stained sheathing and rusted nails mark the route back to the entry point.

Then the roof
We check the suspects in order: flashing, valleys, pipe boots, then the field of the roof itself.
